Vagina

The part of a female’s genital tract that extends from the vulva to the cervix. It is a muscular, tube-shaped hollow organ with an average length of about 8 – 12 cm when relaxed, and can stretch considerably during sexual intercourse and childbirth.

Vaginal and vulval atrophy

A stiffening and loss of elasticity of the tissue in and surrounding the vagina. A symptom of menopause, it can lead to itching or painful irritation.

Vasectomy

Male sterilization.

Viral hepatitis

Inflammation of the liver caused by viruses. Certain viral strains (particularly hepatitis B viruses) are transmitted particularly by sexual contact. Viral hepatitis is therefore considered a sexually transmitted disease.

Viscous

Thick, sticky. In medicine the term is usually used to describe the consistency of mucus.

Vulva

The external organs of the female reproductive system.
